Elon Musk Reveals Tesla AI6 Chip as the Game-Changing Successor to Project Dojo

Earlier this week, news broke that Tesla is stepping back from its Project Dojo. Initially viewed as a setback for the company’s autonomous driving goals, CEO Elon Musk confirmed on X that Tesla is indeed pausing the Dojo initiative.

Musk explained that it doesn’t make sense for Tesla to spread its resources too thin by developing two different AI chip designs. Dojo was meant to enhance Tesla’s self-driving program, but it won’t be used in consumer products.

He suggested that Tesla could focus on using AI5 and AI6 chips for training its Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Autopilot systems instead. Musk emphasized that utilizing many AI5/AI6 chips in a supercomputer setup would significantly cut down on network complexity and costs.

These AI chips are set to be part of several Tesla products, including Optimus, Cybercab, and the new Roadster.

Interestingly, Musk hinted that employing AI5 and AI6 for training could be seen as an evolution of Dojo. Notable tech expert Phil Beisel agreed, stating that “AI6 is now Dojo.”

Beisel pointed out that Dojo was Tesla’s AI training supercomputer, built around the D1 chip, which shares key design aspects with AI5 and AI6. Dojo stood out due to its 5×5 grid design, allowing high-speed data transfer—traits that will continue with AI6.

Musk seem to resonate with this idea when he responded to Beisel on X, signaling his excitement about the future of the AI6 chip. It’s expected that production will ramp up thanks to Samsung’s new factory in Texas, where Musk plans to keep a close watch to hasten the output of Tesla’s AI6 computers.

This shift might highlight a broader trend in the tech industry—companies consolidating resources to focus on a single powerful solution rather than spreading themselves too thin. In an area as competitive as autonomous driving, this could be a strategic move for Tesla.
