Elon Musk is at it again. His companies, xAI and X (formerly known as Twitter), have filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI. They claim that these two giants are working together to crush competition in the artificial intelligence space.
According to the lawsuit, Musk alleges that Apple is favoring OpenAI at the expense of other AI companies, including xAI’s own chatbot, Grok. He argues that Apple is deliberately ranking rivals lower in its App Store to protect its market dominance.
Musk has been vocal about his concerns. Earlier this month, he threatened to sue Apple for what he called an “unequivocal antitrust violation.” He feels that Apple’s behavior makes it nearly impossible for newcomers to succeed in the app market.
OpenAI hasn’t commented on the lawsuit yet. However, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, took to X to defend his company, suggesting Musk manipulates social media to serve his interests.
Apple has responded in the past by asserting that its App Store is designed to be fair and promote a variety of apps. They claim to use multiple signals when ranking apps.
Interestingly, users on X have pointed out that other chatbots like DeepSeek and Perplexity have ranked high in the App Store, even after Apple’s partnership with OpenAI.
This lawsuit isn’t Musk’s first altercation with OpenAI. He co-founded the organization in 2015 but left in 2018 due to disagreements. Last year, he even sued OpenAI and Altman, accusing them of prioritizing commercial gains over their original goal of developing AI for wider societal benefit.
The tension between these influential figures highlights ongoing debates about fairness in tech. As AI continues to grow, the market dynamics will only become more critical. According to a 2023 survey by PwC, over 50% of companies in North America are now integrating AI into their operations—up from just 25% in 2020. This indicates that competition in the AI landscape will likely intensify in the months and years to come.
