The U.S. Marshals Service has taken an unusual step by giving some of Elon Musk’s private security team special deputy status. This means they can act with some authority similar to federal law enforcement agents.
While it’s unclear how many from Musk’s team received this status, it provides them with additional rights, including the ability to carry firearms on federal property. It also means that if any incidents occur, the Marshals Service could face legal responsibility.
Musk, known for his ties to former President Trump, currently doesn’t have protection from the U.S. Secret Service. This leaves his personal security team with limited powers while in Washington, D.C. The increase in Musk’s security measures reflects his growing concerns about safety, especially since he has reportedly faced a rise in threats.
Recently, during an interview, Musk expressed these concerns, stating, “I don’t actually have a death wish.” He acknowledged that while his security detail isn’t huge, it might need to grow.
The deputization of private security teams by the Marshals Service is not common. Typically, the Marshals provide such status to law enforcement officials or agency employees. They can appoint deputies at their discretion, and these appointments last up to one year.
Other notable figures, like Dr. Anthony Fauci, have also had their security teams deputized in the past due to rising threats. However, the practice of giving this status to private security is seen as rare within law enforcement circles.
