The data annotation team was critical for developing Grok, the company’s chatbot. They helped the bot learn by organizing and contextualizing raw data. One Slack channel for note-taking had over 1,500 members before the layoffs, but that number dropped to around 1,000 shortly after news of the cuts.

On social media, xAI announced plans to expand its specialist team by “10X,” indicating they are actively hiring for roles in areas like STEM, finance, and medicine. This sudden shift seems to reflect the company’s belief in the value of specialized knowledge in AI development.

Interestingly, the layoffs followed recent management changes, including the deactivation of accounts for senior leaders on the team. Employees reported that the company had asked them to prepare for a reorganization. In the days leading up to the layoffs, team members were pulled into meetings about their roles and asked to highlight colleagues who excelled in their work.

A company-wide announcement suggested that workers should focus on tests that would assess their skills and strengths. These tests covered diverse areas, from finance to unique domains like “Grok’s personality” and “doomscrolling.”

Diego Pasini, a new leader in the team, emphasized the need for these assessments. Many employees expressed frustration over the tight timelines given to complete the tests, with one commenting on the appropriateness of asking them to work late hours.
