Elon University Athletics Gears Up for Exciting Doubleheader in Virginia!

The Elon women’s tennis team, currently 11-3, is gearing up for a weekend of matches in Virginia. They’re set to take on William & Mary (12-4) on Friday and No. 63 Old Dominion (5-4) on Saturday.

The match against William & Mary will be a rematch of last year’s CAA championship match, where Elon clinched its first title. They won that match 4-2, including crucial wins from players like Simone Bergeron and Lisa Kranec. Historically, though, William & Mary has the upper hand, leading 11-3 in their series.

Elon has been on a strong run recently, with eight wins in their last nine matches. Simone Bergeron, an outstanding player, has secured 16 overall wins this season and was named the CAA Player of the Year last spring. Partnered with Mariana Reding, they’ve been a formidable doubles team.

Their recent match against College of Charleston ended in a 5-2 win for Elon. After losing the doubles point, the Phoenix rallied back to win five of six singles matches.

This weekend’s challenges will be tough. William & Mary is currently unbeaten in the CAA, and Old Dominion is also looking strong. Yet, the Phoenix is determined to maintain momentum, particularly with players like Reding, who has a remarkable streak of straight-set wins.

Recent data shows that the competitiveness of college tennis is increasing, with several players on teams like William & Mary and Old Dominion ranked nationally. Notably, Old Dominion’s Kira Matushkina and Victoria Matasova are recognized in the latest ITA rankings, adding extra intensity to the upcoming matches.

In summary, these matches will not only test Elon’s skill but also their resilience. As they face off against teams with deep histories and strong current rankings, fans can expect a weekend full of excitement on the courts.
