Elon University Revamps Payment System for Enhanced Student Experience

Elon University’s e-billing system has received a makeover as the 2024-25 school year wraps up. Bursar Alessandra Gabriel explains that this update aims to offer a friendlier, more modern experience for users.

Gabriel points out that the previous system had its challenges. Payment plans were in a different portal, and account statements weren’t updated in real time. "We needed improvements to give people easier access to their accounts," she said. This new system, powered by Flywire, a Boston-based payment platform known for its international capabilities, will be a game changer, especially for international students.

International families had limited options for paying tuition if they didn’t have a U.S. bank account. Previously, they mostly relied on wire transfers. Now, with Flywire, they can pay in their home currency and have access to better payment plans, making the process smoother. In the 2024 school year, 119 undergraduate students at Elon, or about 1.8% of the student body, identified as international students.

Graduate students will also benefit from the system since they have a different billing cycle. Gabriel believes these updates will simplify their payment processes too.

The first group to use the new system will be Elon Law students and those in summer MBA programs, starting May 20. Undergraduates will start seeing bills through the new system on June 24, with payments due by August 1.

Recent studies show that digital payment platforms are increasingly popular, with 47% of users preferring to handle financial transactions online rather than in person. This trend aligns with Elon University’s efforts to modernize its billing processes, ensuring that they meet the evolving needs of students today.

As educational institutions adapt, embracing technology like Flywire may not just improve user experience but also attract more international students who value convenience in payment options.
