Elon University’s College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, and School of Health Sciences Embark on an Exciting New Chapter

Elon University celebrated its 135th Undergraduate Commencement on May 23, bringing together graduates and their families at the Schar Center. The morning kicked off with a ceremony for the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Health Sciences, and others, while the business and communication schools celebrated in the afternoon.

University President Connie Book delivered an inspiring message, urging graduates to embrace the excitement of this new chapter in their lives. “This journey will be more unscripted than any you’ve had before,” she noted, encouraging everyone to take in the moment.

Commencement speaker Wes Durham, a proud alumnus from the class of 1988, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share in the celebration. He reflected on the unity of graduates, saying, “Once you cross that stage, you become part of our Elon family.”

Student speaker Craig Brandstetter shared his reminisces about the collective experiences that shaped the class. “Our bubbles have expanded,” he said, referring to personal growth through internships, study abroad, and friendships. He emphasized that these experiences will prepare them for a future they never imagined.

An exciting highlight was the recognition of the inaugural Bachelor of Science in Nursing cohort. President Book pointed out that 27 students celebrated this landmark achievement. She commented on the program’s recent accreditation, showing the school’s commitment to excellence.

The ceremony also featured a heartfelt performance by graduate Kameron Askew, who sang, “What a Wonderful World.” His performance left the audience in awe.

Graduates experienced a spectrum of emotions—joy, anxiety, anticipation—as they received their diplomas. Many, including Iycez Adams from the women’s basketball team, shared feelings of being overwhelmed but in a positive way.

Book closed the ceremony by recalling a poignant moment from the students’ freshman orientation. She highlighted Kayla Swenson, a student whose journey resonated with many. When Book asked for support for Swenson from the audience, every attendee stood to show their solidarity.

As caps flew into the air, a final chant echoed through the space: “Long live Elon!”

Graduation isn’t just a celebration of academic achievements; it marks the beginning of a new chapter. According to a recent survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, this year’s graduates are entering a competitive job market, furthering the importance of their education.
