Gee Ogletree, the president of the IHL Board of Trustees, recently announced that they are looking for a new president for Jackson State University (JSU). He emphasized that finding the right leader isn’t straightforward. “As I ask our pastor to pray for us, I invite everyone to do the same,” he said.
The search comes at a crucial time. JSU, the largest historically black university in Mississippi, has faced leadership challenges lately. Governor Tate Reeves spoke out about this in May, stating, “Jackson State needs consistency. They need quality leadership. The IHL board and the commissioner owe taxpayers an explanation for the issues at JSU.”
Former president Marcus Thompson resigned in May, making him the third president to leave in just five years. This instability raises eyebrows about the university’s leadership and future direction.
Mark Dawson, chairman of the alumni activist group 1877, is calling for clearer accountability in the process. “We want to know the real costs of past failures,” he stated. This includes concerns over potential lawsuits and the university’s current academic standing.
Dawson believes that to move forward, the search committee must openly acknowledge past mistakes. “When they say they’re starting a search, they need to explain how they’ll improve this time,” he said.
Despite these concerns, some students are hopeful, like senior Mya Grimes. “I trust the process of what’s to come,” she shared.
For now, Denise Jones Gregory, a former provost, is the interim president. The search committee will be led by Dr. Steven Cunningham, another JSU alumnus. As the process unfolds, the community watches closely, eager for a leader who can guide JSU towards a stable future.
