Ulster Unionist Agriculture Spokesperson Robbie Butler MLA has called for a balanced approach to climate action, warning against political decisions that may derail efforts rather than refine them. This follows the DUP’s push to withdraw the draft Climate Action Plan for 2023-2027.
Butler emphasized that the original targets set by the Assembly were ambitious and, given the current situation, have become increasingly unrealistic. He pointed to failures in energy targets, infrastructure issues, and the challenges facing agricultural security, all of which are tied to climate commitments. The lack of leadership during the years when Stormont was inactive has also made it hard to meet Northern Ireland’s climate goals.
He believes that instead of a complete withdrawal from the plan, a revision of these targets would be more reasonable. Other regions, like Scotland, have successfully adjusted their targets when necessary, showcasing a more responsible approach.
The Ulster Unionist Party recognizes Northern Ireland’s role in the UK’s climate ambitions but insists on a practical path. Butler noted that pursuing unreachable goals could harm farmers and businesses. He advocates for a circular economy where environmental and economic interests work together.
Farmers have disproportionately shouldered the burden of meeting climate goals. Over 60% of produce is exported, supplying about 10 million people in the UK. It’s essential that farmers receive support in this transition. Butler argues for innovative solutions, like transforming nutrient surplus into opportunities, to support sustainable agriculture.
The Ulster Unionist Party is committed to genuine climate action, insisting that withdrawing from the plan is merely accepting defeat. Farmers have felt the impacts of climate change directly, evident in the extreme weather patterns this year.
To address these issues, the party will propose a motion on Anaerobic Digestion and Food and Energy Security. This initiative aims to tackle both energy and environmental concerns while ensuring farmers play a central role in future Climate Action Plans.
Recent studies show that balancing economic growth with sustainability is essential for long-term environmental goals. According to the UK Climate Change Committee, practical, achievable goals can foster innovation and ensure that all sectors contribute effectively to climate action.
