Sustainability and climate action are essential for the future of Nigeria’s economy. Rep. Sam Onuigbo, who chairs the Committee on Security, Climate Change, and Special Interventions for the North East Development Commission, spoke about this at the launch of the book “Blue Economy: Gateway to a Sustainable Future,” written by Dr. Chika Chukwudi.
Onuigbo emphasized that climate action is no longer just a suggestion; it’s a necessity. Nigeria faces increasing climate vulnerability, making it crucial to embed climate initiatives across all economic sectors. He pointed out that President Bola Tinubu highlighted the fight against climate change as both an environmental need and a significant economic opportunity.
The Climate Change Act of 2021 supports this shift. It marks a move towards recognizing nature-based solutions to combat greenhouse gas emissions. Onuigbo noted that the government has started implementing this act, notably through the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. This ministry aims to manage and enhance the country’s rich ocean resources, benefiting its 853 kilometers of coastline and vast maritime areas.
By focusing on sustainable practices, the ministry aims to boost economic growth, improve livelihoods, and create jobs while protecting aquatic ecosystems. It also represents a significant policy shift, placing emphasis on the importance of marine resources in promoting sustainable national development.
The Act stresses the importance of ecosystems like mangroves and wetlands, highlighting their role in climate mitigation. Onuigbo mentioned the need for institutional structures that can manage these natural assets sustainably. The Act also encourages collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics to develop Nigeria’s Natural Capital Accounts, which can help track and manage these resources effectively.
Beyond environmental benefits, a blue economy can lead to economic diversification and long-term resilience against climate challenges. Onuigbo applauded Chukwudi’s work for offering valuable insights that can inform policies and advance discussions in various sectors.
Moreover, Onuigbo urged the Federal Ministry of Education to integrate climate change topics into school curriculums. This step is crucial to raise awareness among future generations about sustainability.
