British Columbia will conduct a test of its Emergency Alert System on Wednesday, May 7, at 1:55 p.m. This test is crucial for ensuring readiness in case of a major disaster or emergency.

During the test, you’ll hear an alert tone accompanied by a message broadcasted across radio and television stations, as well as compatible cell phones. Here’s what the message will say:
“This is a TEST of the Emergency Alert system. This is ONLY a TEST. In an emergency, this message would tell you what to do to stay safe. This information could save your life. This is ONLY a TEST. No action is required.”
People are reminded not to call 911 about the test, as it may divert resources from those in real need. This is the first of two scheduled tests for the year, with the next one planned for November 19, also at 1:55 p.m.
For an alert to be sent, specific criteria must be met:
- There is a threat to human life.
- The threat is immediate.
- There are recommended actions that could save lives.
Different agencies can issue these alerts based on the situation. Interestingly, reports show that B.C. has not issued any emergency alerts so far in 2025, indicating a calm period.
