Emilia Jones Reflects on Her Role in Task

Emilia Jones feels proud of her versatility as an actress. While many remember her as the only hearing member of a deaf family in the Oscar-winning film CODA, she took on a very different role as the emo niece of a criminal uncle in Task.

Recently, while attending a Rangers game, Jones had a fun encounter. “Someone came up and said, ‘I didn’t recognize you without your mullet!’” Many fans shared that they only realized it was her in Task around the third episode. “It’s flattering. I love acting, especially when I can disappear into a character,” she said.

In an interview, Emilia dove into the exciting finale of Task. She mentioned how thrilling it was to film intense stunts during the climactic scene. “We really went for it, stepping off the script a bit. My adrenaline was through the roof!” she recalled.

Reflecting on her character, Maeve, and her relationship with her uncle Robbie, played by Tom Pelphrey, she expressed deep emotions. Losing Robbie was hard for Maeve. “Despite his choices, he was still her uncle and cared for her. Maeve felt the weight of responsibility but also knew he wanted to protect her. It’s a tough loss,” Jones noted.

Her chemistry with Tom helped convey their complex relationship. “Tom is very generous as an actor. There’s love and resentment between Maeve and Robbie, making it rich to explore,” she said. They bonded off-screen too, sharing meals and laughter, which helped in their performances.

Jones also played a significant role in connecting with the younger cast. “When I started acting at eight, small gestures meant so much to me. I wanted to create a nurturing environment,” she explained. For Ben Doherty, who plays Sam, she gifted a Polaroid camera to capture moments from the set, making lasting memories.

One of the funnier moments on set involved a young actor who often improvised. “Oliver, who plays Wyatt, loved saying ‘chicken butthole’! His energy was infectious, and we just let him run with it,” she laughed.

As the series wrapped up, Jones pondered where Maeve and the kids would go next. “I hope Maeve finds the support she needs. She deserves to grow and focus on herself,” she said.

Talking about her career, she acknowledged the impact of CODA. “That film changed everything for me. I was just a teenager without singing experience, but director Sian Hader took a chance on me, for which I’m forever grateful,” she mentioned. Task has also been meaningful, allowing her to explore her identity.

Regarding the future of Task, Jones is optimistic. “I’ve heard it might take the form of an anthology. I think that would be amazing! Brad Ingelsby’s writing is layered and deeply compelling; it would be a shame not to continue this world,” she concluded.
