Emily Blunt recently shared her thoughts on a new AI-generated actress named Tilly Norwood during an episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast. She hadn’t heard about Tilly before her appearance, but once informed, her reaction was strong.
Blunt expressed her fears, saying, “This is terrifying. Are agencies really doing this? Please stop taking away our human connection.” Her shock was genuine, especially when she saw an image of Tilly. “Good Lord, we’re screwed,” she added.
Tilly Norwood is the creation of Xicoia, an AI talent studio started by Eline Van der Velden. Van der Velden introduced this project at the Zurich Film Festival and hinted that more AI-generated talents might be on the way.
Blunt was particularly concerned about Tilly’s design, which aims to blend attributes from well-known actors. “They want her to be the next Scarlett Johansson,” she pointed out. Blunt’s reply was straightforward: “But we have Scarlett Johansson.”
The emergence of AI in Hollywood is stirring controversy. Last year’s strikes by writers and actors spotlighted the need for protections against the unauthorized use of their digital likenesses. Many actors, including Melissa Barrera and Lukas Gage, voiced their concerns about AI taking over their roles.
Blunt stars in the upcoming film The Smashing Machine, where she plays Dawn Staples. This film, featuring Dwayne Johnson, has already generated buzz at prestigious festivals like Venice and Toronto and is receiving early Oscar attention.
As artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into the film industry, experts warn about its implications. A recent survey found that 75% of actors are worried about losing jobs to AI, emphasizing the urgency for open discussions around its use in the arts.
