BAFTA winner Emma Mackey, known for her role in Sex Education, is set to portray the White Witch in Netflix’s upcoming Narnia film, directed by Greta Gerwig. The news was confirmed by Deadline, though Netflix hasn’t commented on the casting.

Mackey will share the screen with a notable cast that includes Daniel Craig as Digory Kirke’s uncle and Meryl Streep as the great lion Aslan. This movie adapts The Magician’s Nephew, the sixth book in C.S. Lewis’s beloved Chronicles of Narnia series. The story follows Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer as they stumble upon the magical world of Narnia through a magical ring belonging to Digory’s uncle. Filming is expected to start next year.
Netflix originally announced its plans to reimagine the Narnia series in 2018, hiring Gerwig to write and direct shortly after. Interestingly, the film aims for a two-week IMAX run globally around Thanksgiving 2026 before being available for streaming.
Mackey’s previous collaborations with Gerwig include the hit film Barbie. She gained fame for her performance as Maeve Wiley in Sex Education and has appeared in films like Emily, where she portrayed author Emily Brontë, and Death on the Nile. Additionally, Mackey will feature in several upcoming projects, including Ella McCay and a new film from J.J. Abrams.
This exciting adaptation reflects growing interest in classic literature brought to the screen. As Netflix continues to explore and expand its creative content, fans are curious about how these beloved stories will be reinterpreted for a new generation.
