St. Olaf College Welcomes New Volleyball Coach
St. Olaf College has announced the appointment of Emma Nelson as the new head coach for its volleyball program. This exciting news came from Athletic Director Kelly Mahlum.
Emma brings a wealth of experience to the position. She was formerly the lead assistant coach at Augustana University in South Dakota, where she played a key role in the team’s success over the last three seasons. During that time, her team achieved 38 wins, including 25 in the tough Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
A former two-sport athlete at St. Catherine University, Emma played both volleyball and basketball. She understands the dedication needed for success in both academics and athletics. Emma expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating that her decision to join St. Olaf goes beyond just sports. She appreciates the school’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals.
In her previous position, Emma focused on practice planning, player development, and recruiting. She also ran training sessions for defensive skills and served as a mentor during summer volleyball camps. Her goal is to create an environment where student-athletes can grow as leaders and teammates.
Emma also has experience in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), where she coordinated various initiatives focused on sportsmanship and mental health. Her educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in sport administration and leadership.
With her leadership and vision, Emma aims to build on the strong tradition of St. Olaf volleyball. This program is not just about winning games; it’s about preparing students for impactful lives. Emma is committed to creating a supportive community within the college.
