Major contenders for the 2025 Emmy Awards are making headlines, particularly in the categories of Outstanding Drama Series, Comedy Series, and Limited Series. The 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards provided some hints about potential winners, particularly in casting.
Apple TV+’s The Studio took home the award for Casting For a Comedy Series. Meanwhile, Netflix’s Adolescence won in the Limited Series casting category. HBO Max’s The Pitt won for Drama Series casting, adding a layer of excitement to its nominations.
The Studio is a frontrunner for Outstanding Comedy Series. It boasts an impressive 23 nominations, while The Pitt, a newcomer with 14 nominations, is also in the running for the top drama prize. Severance, a veteran with 27 nominations, is leading the pack for Outstanding Drama Series but faces tight competition.
All six major nominees snagged wins at the Creative Arts Emmys. Notably, Hacks and The Studio split the Guest Actor/Actress awards in the comedy category, while Severance and The Pitt shared the honors in drama.
The Studio emerged as the biggest winner of the evening with nine Emmy wins. The Penguin followed closely with eight, then Severance with six. Adolescence and The Pitt each walked away with two, while Hacks earned one.
The connection between casting and wins is particularly strong in the Limited Series category. In the past 20 years, only twice has the winner of Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series not also claimed the Casting award. Recently, this alignment has been flawless. Shows like The White Lotus and The Queen’s Gambit highlight this trend.
Interestingly, the correlation between Casting for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Comedy Series has shifted. Before 2022, the winners had a perfect success rate. However, in recent years, three casting winners failed to clinch the comedy title, suggesting a changing dynamic in the industry.
On the drama front, Casting for Drama Series has maintained a reliable track record, predicting the eventual winner in five of the last six years, including HBO’s Shōgun last year.
As we look ahead to the 2025 Emmy ceremony, it will be intriguing to see whether these trends hold or if new favorites emerge to surprise audiences and experts alike.
