In a quiet neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska, Mike Lodice and his son Kyan eagerly stood in line for the College Baseball World Series. It was their tradition: hotdogs, sodas, and memories. For years, they waited for the gates to open, racing for the best seats once inside. But this day was different. As they approached the entrance, an attendant stopped them. No entry today. The stadium was full.
Kyan remembers that moment vividly. “I cried all the way home. We never missed a game. Just me and Dad. Those were special moments.”
Fast forward a few years, and Kyan, now 22, sits confidently at media day for Kansas State baseball. He shares stories of his journey: how he first caught the eye of the coaches years ago while playing for a travel team, and how a scholarship offer changed his life.
Reflecting on his college career, Kyan speaks about the challenges he faced. “I’ve had injuries that would crush anyone’s spirit,” he laughs, recalling stress fractures in his back, a sprained MCL, and a torn thumb. “It’s hard, physically and mentally.”
K-State head coach Pete Hughes sees Kyan as an anchor for the team. He describes him as essential for transforming the program and supporting younger players. “His leadership is invaluable,” Hughes says.
Now, as K-State gears up for the season, Kyan is focused. Practices can be grueling, with long hours spent on the field and in training. He emphasizes the importance of preparation, using VR tools to analyze pitchers and improve his swing.
What stands out about Kyan is his commitment. He could have left during tougher times, especially with the rise of the transfer portal in college sports, but he chose to stay. “Loyalty matters,” he says. “I want to build something lasting here, with my teammates. I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything.”
His passion resonates. In a recent survey by the NCAA, nearly 85% of student-athletes reported valuing the relationships built during their college years. That’s something Kyan embodies perfectly.
As Kyan gears up for his final season, he can’t help but reflect on past glories, like playing in the Super Regional. “Nothing beats the thrill of competing and winning in front of a big crowd,” he says. His hopes are clear: he dreams of leading K-State back to Omaha, maybe sharing those moments with his dad once again.
For Kyan, every game is more than just a match; it’s about memories, loyalty, and finishing strong. And with each pitch, he moves closer to fulfilling that dream.
