Throughout September, known as Hunger Action Month, Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts is lighting up its entrance in orange to raise awareness about food insecurity in the community.
This month-long initiative aims to support local organizations like Feeding Westchester that work tirelessly to provide food to families in need. Currently, about 38% of households in Westchester face hunger, a troubling rise of 15% from two years ago. The increase is attributed to the surging cost of living, escalating grocery prices, and cuts to federal assistance programs.
Since joining forces with MGM Resorts in 2019, Empire City Casino has become a vital ally in the fight against hunger. The MGM Resorts Foundation has contributed significantly to Feeding Westchester, helping to fund local food pantries and initiatives such as the Retail Recovery program that redirected over 5 million pounds of food from landfills in 2024 alone.
This program plays an essential role in ensuring that healthy food reaches families in need instead of going to waste. The Kids in the Kitchen program promotes healthy eating habits by educating children and their families about nutrition and cooking skills, starting in the Mount Vernon City School District and expanding to others.
Tami Wilson, Chief Operating Officer at Feeding Westchester, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “Empire City is a valued partner in our mission to nourish neighbors across Westchester. With cuts to SNAP on the horizon, our community needs support more than ever.”
Employees at Empire City Casino actively participate in these efforts, volunteering for food distribution and events. Recently, they took part in Feeding Westchester’s Golden Scoop competition, packing 2,100 bags of produce for local seniors, which translates to 14,000 meals.
The commitment from Empire City Casino staff demonstrates a strong dedication to helping the community, with a goal to volunteer over 1 million hours by 2025.
As the issue of food insecurity grows, organizations like Feeding Westchester rely on the support of businesses and individuals. More information about how to get involved can be found at Feeding Westchester’s volunteer page.
In a world where food insecurity is increasing, it’s heartening to see local partnerships rise to the challenge. Together, they foster hope and support for those who need it most.
