Empower Community Connections While Combating Illegal Migration: A Balanced Approach

Washington – President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently emphasized the importance of building strong people-to-people connections between India and the United States. Their commitment to addressing illegal immigration was clear, especially after the U.S. sent back 104 illegal migrants to India, with more repatriation flights on the horizon.

During their meeting at the White House, the two leaders discussed the rising political backlash surrounding Trump’s firm immigration policies. Modi spoke about tackling the entire “ecosystem” that fosters illegal migration, while also highlighting the benefits of legal migration from India, particularly for skilled workers and students.

Despite some of Trump’s supporters expressing concerns about H-1B visa holders, he and influential figures like Elon Musk have shown support for legal migration. They recognize that the over 300,000 Indian students in the U.S. contribute more than $8 billion to the economy, creating numerous jobs in the process. Both leaders noted that the exchange of talent between the two countries is mutually beneficial.

To strengthen educational ties, the leaders discussed the potential for international academic collaborations, which could enhance innovation and produce a skilled workforce. They plan to develop joint degree programs, establish centers of excellence, and explore the possibility of U.S. institutions setting up campuses in India. However, such decisions rest with the universities, not with the government.

Modi and Trump also addressed the need for streamlined pathways for legal migration, affirming their belief in a global workforce. Their discussions included facilitating legal mobility for students and professionals, as well as easing short-term travel for tourists and businesspeople. At the same time, they expressed a commitment to combat illegal immigration and human trafficking.

Illegal immigration poses a significant challenge, especially as the flow of undocumented Indian immigrants to the U.S. has increased since 2020. Reports estimate that around 725,000 illegal Indian immigrants reside in the U.S., though the Department of Homeland Security reported about 220,000 in their last assessment. Recent studies show a concerning rise in border apprehensions and asylum applications from Indian nationals, highlighting the urgency of the immigration issue in U.S. politics.

India acknowledges its responsibility to accept those who have illegally entered the U.S. once their identities are confirmed. However, the method of deportation has led to protests in India, especially when reports emerged about migrants being shackled and flown back in military planes. Modi emphasized the importance of tackling the broader issues that mislead young people into seeking illegal migration opportunities.
