Leibo Glover learned he had diabetes just as he was facing a major health crisis: a necessary below-the-knee amputation. At 63 years old, he thought this was a minor setback. But while driving from South Los Angeles to Miami, an untended toe injury turned into a serious infection. “I had it but didn’t know,” he recalled. A doctor warned him that leaving for California could have cost him his life.
In California, nearly 3.5 million people live with diabetes. A significant number of these cases are preventable Type 2 diabetes. Recent findings from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research show that 16.7% of adults with the lowest incomes have been diagnosed with diabetes, compared to just 8.9% of those with higher incomes. Age also plays a role; 22.3% of adults aged 65 and over have diabetes, a rate nearly double that of younger adults.
Another study from Health Economics and Evaluation Research (HEER) revealed a stark disparity in amputation rates. Those living in low-income areas are far more likely to lose limbs than residents of wealthier neighborhoods.
At the time of his diagnosis in 2018, Glover was dealing with housing instability and financial challenges. Today, he has found more stability and improved his health by changing his diet and lifestyle. “I can actually run, jump, dance, and all of that,” Glover says. He credits avoiding carbohydrates and sugars for managing his diabetes effectively.
Chronic illnesses disproportionately affect Black Californians, often leading to preventable amputations and early deaths. More doctors and advocates are shifting their focus from treatment to prevention. One such advocate is Dr. Bill Releford, who founded Bloom Ranch in Acton. His 250-acre farm aims to make fresh produce more accessible to food deserts.
“This is my assignment,” Releford said. He believes that 75% of amputations can be prevented. African Americans face the highest rates of limb amputations nationwide, with a shocking 50% mortality rate within three years of high-level amputations. These numbers illustrate the urgency of addressing diabetes in underserved communities.
California produces nearly half of the nation’s fruits and vegetables, yet over 8.8 million residents face food insecurity, according to the California Association of Food Banks. Releford plans to collaborate with UCLA and Charles R. Drew University on prescriptive vegetable boxes aimed at improving health outcomes. “Certain vegetables can naturally lower blood pressure,” he noted.
Gardening not only provides fresh produce but also offers health benefits. Research from the University of Southern California reveals that it can enhance cognition, reduce stress, and boost immunity. Releford hopes that his model inspires more urban farmers to replicate these efforts.
Additionally, health care advocates stress the importance of peer support programs. A recent study by the California Health Care Foundation highlights how these programs can empower patients by leveraging shared experiences. Liz Helms, CEO of the California Chronic Care Coalition, emphasizes the need for better health policies, especially in underserved areas. She encourages individuals to advocate for their health and overcome fears related to seeking care.
“Everyone has a right to good, quality, affordable health care,” she says. Having access to telehealth has also made a difference for many, allowing patients to consult doctors without needing to travel.
As Glover continues to thrive, he symbolizes hope for many facing similar challenges. His journey underscores the importance of both prevention and community support in overcoming health disparities.
