César E. Chávez Leadership Conference 2025: A Celebration of Community and Leadership

The César E. Chávez Leadership Conference (CECLC) returned to Western Oregon University this year, filling the auditorium to capacity for the first time since 2019. This event brought together over 950 participants, showcasing a blend of leadership, cultural, and educational workshops.

Cristian Mendez Garcia, the assistant director of Hispanic-Serving Institution Initiatives, emphasized the transformative power of CECLC. “The conference opens doors for students and helps them see themselves as future leaders,” he said. “It’s a privilege to witness their potential.”

This year’s keynote speaker was Alejandra Campoverdi, a well-known advocate for education and women’s health. She described the energy at CECLC as life-changing, stating, “The inspiration and sense of possibility in the room were palpable.”

Since its start in 1990 as a small event for Hispanic high school students, the conference has evolved significantly, celebrating the achievements of Oregon’s Latiné community. Raul Sagrero Gaona, a fourth-year student at Western, shared how attending CECLC and receiving scholarships has helped him grow as a leader. “These opportunities honor my journey as a first-generation college student and inspire me to advocate for our challenges,” he said.

The conference highlights the importance of cultural pride and leadership development for Latiné youth. As CECLC looks to the future, it continues to empower young leaders across Oregon and beyond.

Recent trends show a growing interest in cultural leadership events nationally. A survey by the Association of American Colleges & Universities noted that nearly 75% of students from underrepresented backgrounds feel more engaged in institutions that prioritize inclusive practices. Such data underscores the vital role conferences like CECLC play in shaping the future of leadership.

As CECLC celebrates its legacy, it remains a vital platform for fostering community and nurturing the next generation of leaders.
