MLA Arani Srinivasulu and Collector S. Venkateswar flag off a bicycle rally marking ‘World Cancer Day’ in Tirupati on Friday.

Tirupati District Collector S. Venkateswar emphasized the importance of fitness and a healthy lifestyle in reducing cancer risks during the ‘World Cancer Day’ celebrations.
On this occasion, he kicked off a ‘5K walkathon’ and a bicycle rally organized by the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Cancer Care and Advanced Research (SVICCAR), supported by the Tata Cancer Care Foundation. The event promoted the theme ‘Cancer se jeetna sambhav hai,’ which aligns with global efforts to combat cancer.
Cancer poses a significant health challenge in India. The Indian Council of Medical Research reported approximately 14.6 lakh new cancer cases in 2022, with projections estimating nearly 45 lakh cases in the next five to six years.
Mr. Venkateswar encouraged the youth to embrace healthy eating habits, avoid junk food, and engage in regular exercise. He noted that these practices not only help prevent cancer but also promote overall well-being. Additionally, he mentioned a cervical and oral cancer screening program, which involves a dedicated vehicle, the Pink Bus, traveling to villages. This initiative aims to conclude in six months.
Tirupati MLA Arani Srinivasulu urged the community to reduce plastic use, particularly single-use bags, as microplastics are harmful to health. Superintendent of Police V. Harshavardhan Raju highlighted the importance of early detection in managing cancer effectively.
The event also featured contributions from key figures such as P. Prashanth, medical director at SVICCAR, District Medical and Health Officer Balaji Naik, and Government Maternity Hospital superintendent Parthasarathy.
By coming together for these events, the community took a critical step toward raising awareness and fighting against cancer.
