Empower Your Health: Calhoun County Champions Preventive Care and Informed Choices Before Women’s Health Week

As National Women’s Health Week approaches from May 11-17, the Calhoun County Public Health Department (CCPHD) urges women to focus on their health. This week serves as a reminder of the importance of women’s well-being and how it affects families and communities.

“We encourage women to take this chance to prioritize their health, schedule checkups, and explore ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” says Hailey Black, CCPHD’s family public health director. “Women’s Health Week is all about giving women the knowledge and resources they need to make informed health decisions.”

The CCPHD offers valuable services aimed at supporting women’s health:

  • The Choices Clinic: Provides low-cost or free birth control, wellness exams, STI testing, and reproductive health counseling.
  • Nurse-Family Partnership: A free service connecting first-time moms with personal nurses for home visits and support during pregnancy.
  • WIC: Offers nutrition education, lactation support, and healthy food assistance for pregnant women, new mothers, and children up to 5 years old.

Recent research emphasizes the benefits of preventive care. According to the CDC, women who prioritize routine screenings have a lower risk of serious health issues, yet many still skip them. Women’s Health Week highlights key areas like preventive screenings, reproductive health, and mental wellness. Staying up to date on vaccinations and seeking support is crucial for maintaining good health.
