LAS VEGAS — On Tuesday night, a large crowd gathered outside Valley Hospital, calling for affordable healthcare options. They were part of the Health Services Coalition, which includes the Culinary Union and represents 27 different worker groups.
This gathering was about more than just a protest; it was an urgent plea for change in current health care negotiations. The coalition is in talks with Valley Health System, which operates several hospitals in the area. They argue that healthcare costs are rising too high for many families to handle. Union members believe the system needs to better align with the workers’ demands.
Chase Hoskins, a representative of UA Local 525, spoke passionately about the issue. “The concession can’t be on hardworking families,” he said. “They don’t have piles of cash to just give up. Those who have more need to share more.”
The coalition is responsible for the health insurance of around 300,000 workers in Nevada. The Culinary Union has made it clear that if a contract is not secured by January 1, Valley Health System will be dropped from their plans.
Valley Health System operates 16 hospitals in Southern Nevada, including notable facilities like Henderson Hospital and Summerlin Hospital. As of now, there has been no response from Valley Health System regarding the negotiations.
The struggle for affordable healthcare isn’t new, but it’s increasingly relevant. According to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly 50% of Americans report difficulties in paying medical bills. The rising costs of healthcare continue to burden many families, highlighting the urgency for fair agreements between health systems and their workers.
