Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change, emphasized the important link between gender equality and environmental sustainability. She believes empowering women is crucial for a sustainable future.

In a statement on Saturday, she pointed out that women play a key role in environmental change. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s vital to recognize their resilience and leadership in addressing climate issues.

“Women cannot be overlooked in climate action. From community activists to policymakers, they lead the way toward a greener, more resilient future,” she remarked.

Khurshid Alam also highlighted that climate change hits women hardest, especially those in vulnerable communities. They face severe impacts like extreme weather events, food shortages, and water scarcity. Yet, women are often at the forefront of conservation efforts, pushing for sustainable policies and innovative ideas.

In Pakistan, many women are engaged in climate adaptation and mitigation, particularly in rural regions, where they promote water conservation and sustainable farming. The Pakistani government is committed to including women in climate governance, supporting initiatives like the Women’s Empowerment in Climate Change Adaptation Programme. “Our government acknowledges the need for women’s involvement in achieving climate resilience and is working to provide them with access to funding, resources, and leadership chances,” she stated.

Alam also stressed the need for global collaboration in tackling climate challenges. Women worldwide play vital roles in climate movements. Indigenous women protect forests, young activists call for climate justice, and female scientists create sustainable solutions.

To enable women to participate fully in climate action, she urged the removal of barriers such as limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Safety from discrimination and violence is also crucial. She called on policymakers and communities to back women-led climate initiatives.

“As we honor International Women’s Day, let’s commit to empowering women in climate action. Their leadership is essential for a fair, sustainable, and resilient future for everyone,” she concluded. She expressed admiration for the determination and leadership of women in Pakistan and beyond.
