Have you ever gone for a jog in the park and felt like you were intruding on someone else’s space? Or noticed someone at a pull-up bar, acting like they own it? Outdoor areas can seem exclusive, especially for fitness activities. But remember: nature is for everyone, including you.

Friends Kendyll Myles and Travisa Skinner started The Hike Crew during the pandemic in 2020. Like many, they felt trapped at home and craved connection. Instead of staying indoors, they ventured out to reclaim nature and build community.
Fast forward to today, and what began as casual hikes has transformed into a vibrant community of Black men and women finding joy and wellness outdoors. “The Hike Crew is all about organizing hikes and activities that promote health, community, and volunteerism,” they explain.
Myles and Skinner’s mission is to ensure that outdoor spaces are welcoming for everyone. They aim to help the Black community improve both physical and mental well-being, all while having fun. Hiking offers a chance to confront health disparities, reduce stress, and create a sense of belonging.
To break down barriers, they provide free hikes open to all. “We want to make it easier for anyone to enjoy the outdoors,” they say. Their community service efforts include donating over 3,000 items to local organizations, showing a commitment to connecting outdoor spaces with the community.
Inclusivity is key. “We welcome everyone, no matter their fitness level. No one gets left behind,” they assure. Their goal is for The Hike Crew to be a safe space where people can be themselves, share experiences, and heal together.
Having fun is at the heart of their activities. “We started hiking because we wanted to escape the boredom of being indoors,” they share. Their events range from laid-back excursions to community clean-ups. “Spending time outdoors has improved our health and well-being significantly,” they add.
The community they’ve built is a testament to the joy found in nature. They encourage everyone to grab a friend, hit the trails, and discover the peace that comes from being outside. Nature truly belongs to us all.
