PARKERSBURG — West Virginia University at Parkersburg (WVUP) is teaming up with the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) to boost teacher training for Career and Technical Education (CTE) staff across the state. This partnership aims to equip educators with modern teaching techniques that address today’s job market.
Adam Canter, director of WVDE’s CTE programs and a proud WVUP graduate, initiated this collaboration. He believes that by working together, they can improve how teachers prepare students for future careers. “We’re aligning our training with current educational trends to ensure our teachers are ready for what lies ahead,” he said.
The first training session took place this summer at the state Capitol. About 20 staff members from the WVDE engaged in hands-on activities. They tackled important topics like classroom setup, strategies to support diverse learners, and how to write effective SMART goals. The idea was to create an interactive space where educators could share feedback to guide future workshops.
This training isn’t a one-time event. Monthly sessions will continue through May, touching on subjects like differentiated instruction and classroom management. Additionally, WVUP is launching programs like Youth Mental Health First Aid training to further support educators.
Megan McKnight, director of teacher education at WVUP, emphasized the extensive experience faculty members bring to the program. “Our goal is to ensure that participants walk away with practical tools they can use right away,” she noted. “This partnership showcases our commitment to excellence in education and preparing skilled teachers who can positively impact local communities.”
This initiative does more than enhance CTE programs; it also serves as a model for WVUP’s education students, demonstrating high-quality teaching practices in action. According to a recent survey, 70% of educators believe that ongoing professional development is crucial for effective teaching. This collaboration certainly supports that sentiment by providing relevant resources to strengthen teaching in West Virginia.
