Empowering Change: 100 Women Who Care Donates $10,000 to Support New Ulm Food Shelf

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf recently received a generous $10,000 donation at the biannual giving event hosted by 100 Women Who Care at the New Ulm Country Club.

During this event, members contribute $100 each to support a local nonprofit. They nominate organizations, and three are randomly selected for a vote. This year’s nominees were Tea for Cancer, the Grand Center for Arts and Culture, and the food shelf, which won after a member vote.

This year, the food shelf reported serving 1,602 families and about 3,500 individuals, including 1,300 seniors. However, they have seen a 22% drop in monetary donations and a decrease in food contributions over the last two years. This decline reflects rising community needs.

The food shelf has one executive director and around 25 monthly volunteers. Local churches also help clients select groceries. They run the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which provides monthly food distributions to seniors in partnership with Second Harvest Heartland.

Clients include those on fixed incomes, the homeless, and individuals facing hardships like domestic violence. Many arrive on foot or bicycle, facing significant challenges in transporting food. The donation will cover building maintenance, equipment updates, and essential food purchases.

Since its launch in 2021, the local chapter of 100 Women Who Care has contributed over $100,000 to Brown County nonprofits. Past recipients include NUMAS Haus and Oak Hills Living Center. Coordinators Michelle Markgraf, Melanie Mohrer, and Amy Pearson play a vital role in this giving initiative.

Networking plays a crucial role in fundraising, especially in today’s economy. According to a recent survey by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, community connections have become key for many nonprofits in maintaining support from donors.
