Empowering Change: ECU Health Nurses Step into Leadership as NCONL District VI Representatives

Laura Respess recently wrapped up her term as a district representative for District VI, one of North Carolina’s largest districts. During her time, she communicated with members, organized quarterly meetings, and planned educational sessions. She also coordinated contributions for events, like annual conferences, encouraging members to present their work.

Respess emphasized the importance of having nurses on boards, saying, “Being a representative lets you stay updated on state developments and exchange best practices. It also gives you insight into how our profession is portrayed in legislative matters.”

Dawn Tetterton, who took over Respess’ role, noted, “Through NCONL, we can highlight the remarkable work at ECU Health. Each year, we submit posters and abstracts, and some receive recognition for podium presentations showcasing nursing best practices.”

Tetterton pointed out Respess’s outstanding leadership, stating, “Laura has put in so much effort over the past six years. Her dedication inspired me to step up.” Respess, in return, praised Tetterton’s potential, confident she will excel in her new role.

Respess has challenged Tetterton to focus on diversifying their district, a key strategic goal. She remarked, “We mainly concentrate on acute care, but it’s essential to connect with nursing leaders in ambulatory care and public health. These sectors significantly contribute to our mission.”
