Environmental advocate Gloria Kasang Bulus has recently been honored with the titles of Saraiuniyar Sauyin Yanayi Chikun (Queen of Climate) and Jakadiyar Sauyin Yanayi Kudendan (Ambassador of Climate) during a ceremony in Chikun, Kaduna State. This event took place on May 3, 2025, with His Royal Highness, Ishaku Yari, conferring these titles in recognition of Bulus’ dedication to climate advocacy both locally and internationally.

The ceremony was a gathering of community leaders, traditional rulers, and environmental groups, all there to celebrate Bulus’ achievements. Notable attendees included Dr. Joseph Onoja from the Nigeria Conservation Foundation and Ahmed Saba, a member of the Africa Network of Parliamentarians on Climate Change.

In her speech, Bulus expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the need for urgent climate action. She remarked, “This recognition belongs not only to me but to everyone working for a healthier planet—every woman planting a tree, every child refusing to litter.”

Reflecting on her childhood in Kaduna, she recalled a time when nature thrived, saying, “Do you remember when the rains were timely and butterflies filled our gardens? Where are those signs of a balanced environment now?” Such memories highlight the changes she has witnessed in her lifetime due to environmental degradation.

Bulus has been involved in numerous organizations, including 350 Africa and the Africa Climate Reality Project. Her work focuses on promoting renewable energy and enacting stronger environmental policies. She vowed to use her new roles to elevate climate messages and rally support for environmental protection efforts.

The event also featured traditional performances and solidarity messages from various environmental groups, signaling a broader movement towards recognizing community leadership in Nigeria’s climate response.

Research from the Global Carbon Project indicates that global carbon dioxide emissions reached a record 36.4 billion metric tons in 2022, illustrating the urgency of Bulus’ mission. Experts warn that immediate action is necessary to avoid catastrophic climate effects.

According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, 67% of respondents across several countries expressed concern about climate change, underlining that advocacy efforts like Bulus’ resonate with many.
