Empowering Change: How a San Francisco Church Youth Group is Transforming Lives at the Local Food Bank

Every summer, the Park City Community Church takes youth members on a service trip to another community. This year, 11 kids, from sixth to 11th grade, traveled to San Francisco to “learn, serve, and grow in faith.”

With four adult leaders, they stayed at the Bethany United Methodist Church from July 20-25, immersing themselves in the city’s needs.

“From the moment we arrived, our group jumped right in,” said Katie Daugherty, the church’s office manager. “We kicked things off with a sushi dinner, cooking together, games, and prayer. It set a wonderful tone for the week.”

This year, the church worked with organizations like GLIDE Memorial Church and the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. A report from the food bank reveals that one in five people in San Francisco struggles with food insecurity.

“At GLIDE, our students participated in the food ministry, witnessing compassion firsthand and understanding the importance of serving others,” Daugherty explained. “At the food bank, they packed meals with enthusiasm, fostering teamwork and friendships.”

In the evenings, the kids would gather to reflect on their day and connect their experiences to scripture.

Through their service, the youth confronted real issues like food and housing insecurity.

“It was eye-opening to see what others face daily,” said participant Paxton Weather.

When not volunteering, the group explored San Francisco, walking through Chinatown, savoring local dishes, and enjoying sunny days at the pier. They even visited Alcatraz Island, which led to thought-provoking discussions about justice and incarceration in America.

“This trip was not just about traveling; it deepened our compassion, strengthened our community, and reinforced our faith,” Daugherty added.

Such experiences are crucial, especially today. A recent study indicates that youth involvement in community service helps develop empathy and leadership skills. Trips like this one lay the foundation for future positive social change.
