DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A new group has emerged in southern Iraq’s Dhi Qar province to help residents facing the harsh impacts of climate change. This group, called the Environmental Defenders Network, aims to protect the environment and advocate for local communities affected by drought.
Haider Saadi, a member of the group, shared that the Environmental Defenders Network follows a scientific approach. They are committed to transparency and comply with Iraq’s laws. The team has already started addressing serious environmental issues backed by reliable data. With over 100 members, including experts and activists, they cover various districts in Dhi Qar.
Their mission focuses on highlighting the environmental struggles of the people, suggesting realistic solutions, and raising awareness about modern technologies for resource management.
Iraq faces significant challenges due to climate change, with Dhi Qar being particularly vulnerable. According to the International Organization for Migration, about 170,000 people were displaced across 12 provinces due to climate issues in 2024. Dhi Qar reported the highest number of families affected, largely due to drought and decreasing water levels.
The United Nations ranks Iraq among the five countries most at risk from climate change. This crisis poses a severe threat to the livelihoods and food security of countless families. A 2023 report by the UN Environment Programme warns that by 2035, Iraq could lose around 30% of its agricultural land, endangering millions who rely on farming in provinces like Dhi Qar.
Similarly, the World Bank cautions that if no action is taken, climate-related migration might impact one in five Iraqis by 2030. To combat these challenges, Iraq needs about $233 billion in climate investments by 2040.
