Maharashtra’s temperatures are rising, a trend that Patel and many experts find alarming. "We need to act now to save the Earth," he stated, underlining the urgency of the situation.
Bamboo is truly remarkable. It can absorb up to 60 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare every year. That’s much more than many tree species can manage, making bamboo an essential ally in our battle against rising CO2 levels. This characteristic is backed by studies showing that bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants. In fact, some species can grow up to three feet in just one day!
To promote bamboo, Maharashtra has initiated the Atal Bamboo Samruddhi Yojana. This ambitious plan aims to plant bamboo across 10,000 hectares, backed by significant central government funding. The goal is not just to combat climate change but also to invigorate local economies.
Patel predicts that global temperatures could rise by 2 degrees Celsius by 2050. With such a potential crisis looming, he contends that over 800,000 cooperatives in India could boost bamboo planting efforts significantly, especially under the guidance of Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah.

On April 22, Patel’s NGO, Phoenix Foundation Sanstha, will host an event in New Delhi to discuss strategies for expanding bamboo cultivation further. As awareness about bamboo’s benefits spreads, there’s hope that more people will join the movement to make our planet a greener, healthier place.
