A new government program aimed at building climate-resilient communities has officially launched in Iloilo City. Spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), this initiative is part of a broader effort to tackle climate change.
DENR Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna shared that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has called for housing that can withstand climate challenges, alongside livelihood programs to support local communities.
Named “Handog ng Pangulo: Luntiang Bukas,” the program focuses on four key areas:
- Land Titles: This gives families legal ownership of their land, promoting stability and investment.
- Climate-Ready Housing: Building homes designed to handle climate impacts.
- Linear Development: Creating spaces for community growth.
- Nature and Livelihood: Encouraging environmental stewardship as a source of income.
During the launch, 820 land patents were awarded in Western Visayas and over 9,000 across the Philippines. Of these, there were 647 agricultural patents, 142 residential patents, and 31 special patents given to farmers and local institutions. These titles not only secure ownership but also allow families to plan for the future and pass on their land.
In addition, the DENR distributed 5,000 seedlings as part of its Enhanced National Greening Program. These seedlings, including fruit and timber species like cacao and guava, allow communities to play a role in forest restoration while also providing a potential source of income.
The event also showcased new housing projects under the Green and Climate-Resilient Housing Program, featuring homes designed with features like cool roofs and rainwater harvesting systems. These designs aim to protect families from climate-related issues.
Moreover, the Iloilo City government introduced its Linear Park Developments, which aim to enhance urban life. Cuna praised these parks for their benefits: cooling the streets, cleaning the rivers, and providing safe play areas for children.
The Luntiang Bukas program encourages collaboration between the national government and local authorities to ensure effective implementation. It’s not just about building homes; it’s about safeguarding the future of communities throughout the Philippines.
