Empowering Communities: Great Rivers United Way Awards Mental Health Grants to Support Local Organizations

Great Rivers United Way has launched its first mental health grants, supporting twenty organizations aimed at improving mental health in the area. Liz Evans, the community impact director, emphasizes the importance of tackling mental health issues, noting it’s a significant community need.

“We developed a grant program to make a real difference. We’re proud to provide $500,000 annually for the next three years to these organizations,” says Evans.

One recipient, Couleecap, will enhance its SOAR program, which is designed to assist homeless individuals with mental health diagnoses in applying for social security benefits. Becky Koske, the housing and community services director, highlights the value of having a case manager:

“Having someone to guide you through the medical and mental health systems can make a huge difference. Support makes the journey easier,” she explains.

Another organization receiving funds is Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA). They train community members to advocate for children facing abuse and neglect. Executive director Anne Gordon shares how the grant will enhance their programs focused on the mental well-being of these children:

“This funding will help us retain staff and expand our services, including mentorship and court advocacy,” Gordon states.

Evans believes these grants will foster a collaborative environment for enhancing mental health support:

"I’m eager to see how United Way can boost our partner organizations and set collective goals for serving the community better," she adds.

The grant funding comes from community donations, showcasing the power of collective support in addressing mental health challenges.

Recent studies reveal that around 1 in 5 adults experience mental health issues each year. Programs like these are essential in providing the necessary support for those affected. As mental health continues to gain attention, community initiatives like these play a crucial role in creating a supportive environment.
