On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Election Commission. He noted how it has used technology to empower citizens and ensure fair elections.
His remarks were part of his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ broadcast, just ahead of National Voters’ Day on January 25. This day also marks the foundation of the Election Commission. Modi’s praise comes amid criticism from opposition parties about the Commission’s alleged bias towards the BJP.
Modi emphasized that the Election Commission has continuously modernized the electoral process. “It has used the power of technology to strengthen people’s power,” he said. He encouraged everyone to participate in elections and embrace democracy.
Recently, doubts about the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have surfaced among opposition parties. Modi’s support may be seen as a response to these concerns.
The prime minister reflected on India’s journey as a democracy, mentioning that after independence, some questioned its viability. However, he asserted that India is indeed the “mother of democracy.”
This month’s program aired on the third Sunday instead of the usual second Sunday due to the upcoming Republic Day celebrations.
Modi also played audio clips from members of India’s constituent assembly, including prominent figures like Rajendra Prasad and Bhim Rao Ambedkar, to showcase the values they championed.
Touching on the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, he noted the gathering of people from various backgrounds. “There is no discrimination of any kind,” Modi stated.
