Empowering Communities: Join Our Second Capacity-Building Training on Climate Project Monitoring & Evaluation!

The Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), along with the Department of Climate Change (DCC) in Nigeria, held a workshop for Climate Desk Officers and Directors from local governments. This training started on October 22, 2025, focusing on how to collect data and assess greenhouse gas emissions.

Participants ranged from beginners to those with some experience in Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of climate projects. Mr. Gboyega Olorunfemi, the Project Lead at SPP, led the training. He highlighted the importance of M&E in managing climate change projects effectively.

Olorunfemi shared that a solid M&E framework helps with better decision-making and accountability. This clarity can even attract more funding for climate initiatives at the local level. He pointed out that monitoring tracks progress, while evaluation assesses how effective a project is in achieving its goals. He introduced a simple M&E framework involving inputs, outputs, outcomes, and impacts. An example he used involved a climate-resilience project, showing attendees how their actions could create measurable change.

Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe’s representative, Ms. Dolapo John, mentioned that the training came about from previous conversations with local officials. She stressed the need for better documentation practices, noting that some states have slipped in rankings due to insufficient documentation of their activities, pointing out a major gap in governance.

This workshop aims to strengthen the skills of officials managing climate projects, especially after a recent governance ranking revealed significant capacity shortfalls in many states. The initiative enjoys support from the European Climate Foundation (ECF) and will continue with a focus on Climate Finance in future phases.

Research shows that effective training in M&E can significantly improve project outcomes. According to a recent study by the World Resources Institute, countries that invest in training their officials see a 30% increase in successful project implementation.

The challenges of climate change require strong local governance. By building the capacity of officials now, Nigeria can enhance its climate response and ensure a healthier future for its citizens.
