Students and teachers in the Selma Unified School District are gearing up for the spring semester. This season also brings back the Selma Public Education Foundation (SPEF), a group dedicated to enriching student learning experiences.
Founded in 1993, SPEF aims to support local education. After a pause during the pandemic, the foundation is ready to make a difference again. “It’s a way of getting involved and enhancing our community,” says SPEF President Louis Franco.
Each semester, teachers can apply for grants from the foundation. A committee reviews the applications and decides who receives funding. The evaluation focuses on how many students will benefit and whether the initiative has lasting value, such as creating a reading lab for future classes.
Most grants range from $500 to $1,000 and can cover various needs, including reading programs, STEM kits, or biology resources. Last fall, SPEF awarded a total of $15,000 in grants to educators across the district.
Funds for these grants come from local donations, contributions from teachers, and annual fundraisers. Franco hopes these efforts show teachers that the community supports them.
Looking ahead, Franco is eager to see how SPEF can continue to assist the school district this spring. He encourages everyone to recognize the value of the foundation and become involved. “As community members, we should support this initiative to help it thrive,” he emphasizes.
For those interested in supporting SPEF, reaching out to the district office or participating in upcoming fundraisers is a great way to get involved.
