Empowering Families: Join Us for a Life-Changing Food Donation Event at the Salvation Army

In Allentown, Pa., a woman called herself “Margarita.” She was 30, with two small children. She didn’t want to share her real name. It’s a reminder that needing help doesn’t mean losing one’s pride.

Margarita was one of over 200 people who lined up outside The Salvation Army for food and essentials during a resource event set up by Niagara Bottling and Feed the Children. Her empty cart symbolized her pressing needs—a struggle many face every day.

“Me and my kids, I don’t know what we’d do without things like this,” she said, expressing gratitude to those who help.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 22% of Allentown’s residents live below the poverty line. Rising costs of food, gas, and housing make it hard for many families to fill their kitchen tables.

Joe Allegro from Feed the Children highlighted the crisis: “Families are stretched to the brink right now. Energy and food costs are at an all-time high. People have to choose between paying rent and buying food.”

At the event, volunteers distributed boxes filled with meals, fresh produce, hygiene products, and children’s activities. Each box cost around $100 to create, addressing only part of the pressing issue of food insecurity in the area.

Each recipient received more than just food. “We don’t look at these as charity events,” Allegro said. “We try to provide dignity. They deserve both support and dignity.”

Rebecca Bodnar, principal of Central Elementary STREAM Academy nearby, noted the emotional impact of such events. “This is not just about food. It represents care and compassion,” she explained.

Maj. Ismael Correa of the Salvation Army echoed this sentiment. He viewed the volunteer efforts as transformative; they touched lives beyond mere physical needs.

The sense of community was palpable, with many children receiving help alongside their parents. While hunger and economic hardship loom large, events like this foster hope, support, and dignity for those in need.
