The Department of Climate Change, alongside the Society for Planet and Prosperity, has kicked off a crucial climate education initiative in Abuja. This program aims to boost environmental awareness in schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Teachers are at the heart of this initiative. They’re receiving training to better educate their students on climate change and sustainability. This first phase focused on around 40 teachers from schools in the Abuja Municipal Area Council. The training used a new Climate Education Manual, developed last year, which covers essential topics and practical teaching methods.
Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, president of the Society for Planet and Prosperity, emphasized that understanding these concepts is vital. He said, “We want teachers to feel confident passing this knowledge to their students.” Plans are in place for ongoing support, including regular visits to schools to help with further training and to establish climate clubs.
Mr. Abdullahi Muse Zakir, a director at SEB, spoke about making climate education engaging and solution-oriented. “When students grasp the science of climate change, they can become responsible leaders of tomorrow,” he remarked.
The urgency of this initiative is clear. Nigeria is facing serious climate challenges, like rising temperatures and flooding, which directly impact schools and communities. Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping how students view environmental responsibility. Mr. Eba Elima Williams, Vice Principal at Government Secondary School Tudun-Wada Wuse, noted, “This program is a significant starting point.” It hopes to inspire widespread participation in climate education across the FCT.
Feedback from teachers has been positive. Dr. Isah Philp Abdulmalik from Government Secondary School Idu-Karimo shared, “The workshop opened my eyes to the importance of climate-responsive planning.” He’s determined to start a climate club in his school to further raise awareness.
This initiative aligns with growing global concern about climate change. According to a recent report by the UN, almost 90% of the world faces the effects of climate change, underscoring the importance of education in fostering informed, proactive citizens. By empowering teachers to take an active role, this program is setting the stage for a new generation that values and acts upon environmental sustainability.
