Stakeholders in the climate justice sector are advocating for climate justice to be included in Nigeria’s secondary school curriculum. They believe this change could empower young people and encourage environmental sustainability.

During a workshop on June 25, 2025, in Abuja, organized by the Climate and Sustainable Development Network (CSDevNet), experts discussed the need for such integration. Dr. Samson Ogallah, head of the Climate Change Unit at the African Union, highlighted that climate change affects marginalized communities the most. These groups often contribute the least to global emissions but face the harshest consequences.

In Nigeria and many African countries, the economy heavily relies on agriculture, making climate change a pressing concern. Dr. Ogallah emphasized that education should not only focus on climate science but also foster resilience and leadership skills among students. He suggested that lessons in geography could explore local ecosystems, while art could help students express their visions for a sustainable future. Including case studies about communities suffering from drought and flooding would add real-world context to their learning.

Mr. Atayi Babs, former National Network Coordinator of CSDevNet, spoke on the importance of engaging the younger generation in climate activism. He noted that involving children is crucial for building a sustainable future in advocacy. Introducing climate justice in schools could deepen awareness, especially since Nigeria ranks high among countries severely impacted by climate change.

Dr. Onuche Unekwu, a senior lecturer at the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, pointed out that educating students on climate change is vital. He believes that the sooner students learn about these issues, the better equipped they will be to tackle the negative effects on our planet.
