Trade workers are in great demand in West Texas, and local organizations are stepping up to help prepare students for these careers.
The West Texas Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) recently supported students at Ector County Independent School District (ECISD) with a donation of tools worth about $1,200. This donation is part of the AGC’s effort to equip students for future jobs in various trades.
“It’s like Christmas when we get new tools,” said Sherman Haller, the Construction Technology Teacher at ECISD. His enthusiasm reflects the excitement many feel about receiving fresh equipment for learning.
The donated tools include essential items like drills, safety gloves, and tape measures, all geared towards helping students learn skills in areas such as concrete work, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical trades. Scott Hughes, the Executive Director of the AGC, emphasized the importance of preparing students for the workforce. “We want to ensure they are ready when they enter the job market,” he said.
Every day, around 50 to 60 students participate in the Career and Technical Education program at ECISD. With so many young hands using the tools, they wear out quickly, making this donation especially valuable. Haller noted that the new supplies will help replace worn-out items, particularly safety gear that gets used up faster.
This initiative acknowledges the hard work students put into their education. Haller, who began his trade career in high school, hopes this program inspires students to discover their passion in a trade. “Finding the right fit can lead to a rewarding career,” he shared.
This donation marks the West Texas AGC’s first effort of this kind, but they aim to make it an annual tradition, providing tools for trade programs every spring. Hughes expressed hope that students feel appreciated and excited about their learning opportunities.
