ECU Health is starting a new scholarship program to help community college students in eastern North Carolina who are pursuing high-demand health science degrees. This initiative aims to tackle workforce shortages in vital health roles like nursing and allied health.
The program offers $5,000 in financial support and includes a one-year commitment to work full-time at ECU Health after graduation. Applications will be accepted until May 22.
Josh Crocker, Vice President of ECU Health’s Human Resources Center of Excellence, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “We’re targeting specific roles where we need help,” he explained. Positions such as physical therapy assistants, occupational therapy assistants, and surgical technicians are among those that will benefit.
This scholarship reflects a broader trend in health care where organizations are becoming more proactive in addressing the workforce crisis. Recent studies show that health care job vacancies have surged by 20% over the past year. Many organizations are realizing that investing in education can be an effective way to ensure they have the talent they need in the future.
Crocker noted, “Our goal is to relieve the financial pressure for students in our region. This is crucial for improving health care quality and access in eastern North Carolina.” ECU Health is investing $165,000, which will provide 33 scholarships, partnering with several community colleges to reach potential applicants.
This program not only supports individual students but also aims to strengthen the overall health care system in the area. By developing local talent, ECU Health hopes to improve health outcomes in the community.
