NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan Connects Columbia Students to Public Health Leadership
Recently, NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan welcomed 40 Master of Public Health students from Columbia University’s Mailman School for a special discussion on public health leadership. This “Fireside Chat,” led by Metropolitan’s CEO Julian S. John, COO Elsa Cosme, and Auxiliary President Betsy Mendez White, focused on community care, hospital leadership, and the responsibilities within the largest public healthcare system in the U.S.
This event gave students a closer look at the vital role of safety-net hospitals in public health. Leaders shared insights into the daily operations that affect patient care, especially in underserved areas like East Harlem. Here, residents often face higher rates of preventable health issues like diabetes and heart disease, along with limited access to healthcare.
Julian S. John emphasized, “Exposing students to community-focused care models helps them understand local care realities and our shared responsibility for better health outcomes.” He highlighted the importance of mentorship in shaping future leaders in healthcare.
The discussion revealed the qualities needed for effective leadership in health care, such as resilience and empathy. Hospital leaders shared their personal journeys, providing students with practical advice for building careers in a rapidly changing industry.
Metropolitan Hospital also offers various educational programs, from medical residencies to volunteer initiatives, nurturing the next wave of healthcare professionals. With a legacy spanning 150 years, they focus on empowering students and reinforcing healthcare pathways that serve local communities.
Interestingly, research shows that mentorship significantly impacts career success in healthcare. A study by the Association of American Medical Colleges found that 73% of physicians credited mentors with helping them navigate their careers. This reinforces the value of events like the Fireside Chat.
As the largest municipal healthcare system in the U.S., NYC Health + Hospitals is committed to serving over a million New Yorkers each year through various locations and services, aiming to make health equity a priority in their mission.
