Pacific University and Community Colleges Unite for Pharmacy Careers
Pacific University is joining forces with two Oregon community colleges to support students aiming for pharmacy careers. Starting this spring, Chemeketa Community College in Salem and Umpqua Community College in Roseburg will offer pre-pharmacy courses. After completing these, students can seamlessly transition to Pacific’s Doctor of Pharmacy program in Hillsboro.
Students will have two options: an accelerated three-year program or a more flexible five-year track. Marketa Marvanova, dean of the School of Pharmacy, emphasizes that this partnership provides a clear and rewarding path for aspiring pharmacists. It aims to enhance Oregon’s healthcare workforce by increasing access to higher education and supporting local talent.
The need for pharmacists is on the rise. According to data from the U.S. Department of Labor, job opportunities in this field are expected to grow by 5% over the next decade. However, a report from the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis warns of a potential shortage, predicting nearly 5,000 fewer pharmacists than needed by 2036.
“This collaboration offers unique educational paths that are not available elsewhere in Oregon and Washington,” said Marvanova. “We are preparing skilled pharmacists ready to support patient care and community health.”
Students in the program will get early support through advising and professional development, including waived application fees. They can also explore the Jump Start Early Assurance Program, which guarantees conditional admission to the School of Pharmacy and helps them connect with faculty and events.
Since 2006, Pacific has offered its accelerated pharmacy program. The new five-year pathway launched in 2023 helps students manage other commitments while studying. These pathways not only improve job readiness but also foster a new generation of healthcare providers committed to quality patient care.
As healthcare needs shift, programs like this can play a crucial role in meeting both current and future demands within the field.
