Empowering Futures: Lexicon and Mills University High Launch Innovative Welding Program

On May 7, Steel fabricator Lexicon, Inc. and Mills University Studies High School in central Arkansas announced the opening of the Lexicon Academy of Advanced Manufacturing and Construction. This exciting program aims to prepare students for rewarding careers in high-demand fields.

Students who complete the program will graduate with valuable OSHA 10 and welding certifications. They’ll kick off their sophomore year with a course introducing them to various trades, utilizing virtual reality simulators. As they progress, they’ll take advanced welding classes during their junior and senior years.

Damian Patterson, the principal of Mills High School, expressed pride in the academy. “If you haven’t heard about us yet, you will now. We want to be a destination school not just for students, but for teachers too,” he said. This is part of a broader initiative to prepare students for high-demand jobs.

Lexicon has significantly invested in this program, donating around $160,000, which includes two reconditioned trailers, multiple welding bays, protective gear, consumables, and a virtual welder. The public got a chance to celebrate this milestone during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the trailers.

According to Patrick Schueck, Lexicon’s CEO, the company specializes in constructing essential infrastructure, including bridges, data centers, and automotive plants. He emphasized the importance of purpose: “Some people find their purpose in serving others. For me, it’s about building—structurally and personally.” Schueck highlighted that out of Lexicon’s 3,000 employees, around 1,000 have welding skills. Graduates of the academy, he believes, will have vast opportunities with Lexicon. “If you can weld, we want you,” he affirmed.

Mills University Studies is part of the Academies of Central Arkansas, a regional initiative designed to connect education and industry. The Academies model is being adopted across four school districts in Pulaski County, supported by local business leaders and chambers of commerce.

The program starts with a freshman seminar that helps students explore potential careers. They will have chances for mentorship and training with industry professionals, culminating in a capstone project developed with Lexicon staff. Each Academy partner must contribute an initial investment of $150,000 in resources and talent, plus $50,000 annually.

This approach not only equips students with practical skills but also builds valuable connections with local businesses, laying the foundation for successful careers.
