Empowering Ghana’s Youth: A Call for Urgent Climate Action in the Upper West Region

Young activists in Ghana’s Upper West Region are calling on local authorities to act quickly on climate issues. They warn that delays could harm communities now and in the future.

On Tuesday, the She Leads Social Movement organized a march through Wa, timed with International Youth Day. Participants carried signs that shouted messages like “Fund Our Future! Protect Our Lives” and “Our Planet, Our Duty.” Their goal? To secure funding for environmental protection and to push for immediate climate action.

Felicia Bagania, a representative from the movement, delivered a petition highlighting urgent environmental threats. Deforestation, unpredictable rainfall, and harmful mining practices topped the list of concerns. The petition asked for better cooperation between local agencies, dedicated budgets for environmental efforts, and more input from women and marginalized groups in policy-making. They also urged investments in renewable energy and climate-smart agriculture.

Regional Minister Charles Lwanga Puozuing accepted the petition and praised the youth for their initiative. He reassured them that the council would review their demands and pass on recommendations to the national government. “The President’s administration takes environmental and climate issues seriously,” he said, promising that their concerns would be addressed.

This region is particularly vulnerable to climate change, as it sits in a transitional ecological zone. Changes in rainfall directly affect farming and food security, which are crucial for local livelihoods.

CARD Ghana helped coordinate the demonstration through its She Leads Project, teaming up with Plan International Ghana and Activista Ghana. This effort is part of a larger movement to amplify youth voices in climate policy across West Africa.

Interestingly, this youth-led climate activism isn’t just happening in Ghana. A recent survey by the World Bank found that young people worldwide are increasingly concerned about climate change, with 80% supporting urgent action. This growing global youth movement highlights a universal desire for a sustainable future.

As climate-related challenges continue to rise, local actions like this one may spark broader conversations and initiatives. Keeping communities engaged in climate discussions can empower them to influence policy effectively and push for meaningful change.
