Empowering Girls in Sports Medicine: CommonSpirit Health Champions Denver Pioneers Athletes

Dr. Jennell Kopp is known for her lively spirit at the University of Denver’s athletics. As the team’s medical director, she serves not just the athletes but also brings a much-needed energy to the training room.

Kopp, a certified sports and family medicine doctor with CommonSpirit Health, assists athletes across various sports. Her role presents unique challenges, especially being a woman in a field often dominated by men. She recalls a frustrating moment when someone assumed her role was merely as “the doctor’s wife.”

However, Kopp believes that her position as a woman has advantages too. “It allows me to connect more easily,” she shares. Many athletes feel more at ease discussing sensitive topics like eating disorders and mental health with her.

Athletes like soccer player Samantha Dreiling appreciate Kopp’s presence. “You can literally come to her with anything,” Dreiling says. Kopp takes great pride in her impact, especially on female athletes. Hearing, “I didn’t realize I could do that,” from her athletes fills her with inspiration.

In recent years, there has been a notable shift towards supporting women in sports and medicine. For example, a 2022 survey by the Women’s Sports Foundation revealed that 67% of young female athletes felt motivated by female role models in sports. Kopp is a part of this movement, highlighting the importance of representation.

Her influence extends beyond just medical advice. “Just seeing someone like her gives me confidence to pursue my goals,” Dreiling adds, emphasizing how Kopp’s journey serves as a guiding light.

In partnership with CBS News Colorado, CommonSpirit Health is hosting the second annual “Girls in the Game” event on August 16 at DU. This initiative aims to empower young girls in sports and inspire future generations.

Dr. Jennell Kopp’s dedication exemplifies how the right support can make a difference and pave the way for many young athletes on their journeys.
