Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently called on tech companies in India to focus more on local needs rather than developing products just for overseas markets. Speaking at the IIIT Auditorium in Bengaluru, he emphasized the importance of a self-reliant India in technology.
He introduced the idea of “Tech Atmanirbhar Bharat,” encouraging Indian firms to prioritize manufacturing and innovation for the Indian market. Modi noted that while Indian tech companies have excelled globally, there’s now a crucial need to direct efforts towards addressing domestic challenges.
“Bengaluru should lead the way in manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative,” he declared. He highlighted a vision where products meet high standards, ensuring there’s no harm to the environment and no defects in quality.
Recent statistics show impressive growth in India’s exports. Since 2014, total exports have surged from $480 billion to $850 billion. In electronics, exports jumped from $6 billion to $38 billion. This remarkable progress highlights India’s emergence as a major player in global manufacturing.
His vision extends to various sectors, including automotive, where exports have doubled from $16 billion in 2014. Today, India ranks as the fourth-largest exporter of automobiles, a significant achievement that bolsters the Atmanirbhar Bharat concept.
Digital innovation is also a key part of Modi’s plan. He pointed out that over half of the world’s real-time transactions happen through India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Digital services like the ‘UMANG’ app allow citizens to access around 2,200 government services from their phones, bridging the gap between the government and the public.
Modi added that India is on track to become a leader in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technologies. The country aims to produce its own chips soon, and its advancements in space technology have already made India a global benchmark for low-cost, high-tech missions.
