Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan recently spoke at the 29th National Session of the Indian Youth Parliament in Nagpur. He urged young people to connect with their cultural roots and embrace their native languages as they work toward making India a developed nation by 2047.
The theme of the event was “Indian Languages & Developed India–2047.” Radhakrishnan highlighted that speaking one’s mother tongue should be seen as a strength, not a limitation. He stressed that India’s rich linguistic diversity is vital for its cultural unity and should be valued as the nation grows.
Notably, Nagpur holds historical significance as the birthplace of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), founded by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Radhakrishnan linked the organization’s commitment to national service with a broader vision of putting the “nation first.”
He emphasized that India’s development should come from its indigenous ideas, deeply rooted in local languages, traditions, and knowledge systems. He praised institutions like the Central Sanskrit University for their role in preserving India’s classical heritage, noting that Sanskrit creates a sense of unity among various Indian languages.
Radhakrishnan also discussed the importance of democratic values, like constructive dialogue and mutual respect in discussions. Drawing on his experience as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, he stated that meaningful conversations and consensus are crucial for good governance.
He encouraged students to take part in initiatives such as the Youth Parliament, describing them as essential for nurturing leadership skills and a sense of responsibility towards the nation. “Today’s youth are the driving force behind India’s future,” he said. He added that the world is watching India’s progress, and the younger generation will play a key role in achieving the goal of a developed nation by 2047.
In recent years, surveys have highlighted the importance of youth engagement in politics and social issues. A study by the Centre for Youth Development in India showed that 68% of young people want to play an active role in their communities. Engaging in platforms such as the Youth Parliament can help foster this desire.
At the event, Radhakrishnan also paid homage to Dr. Hedgewar at his memorial, reflecting on the importance of history in shaping today’s values. The session brought together various dignitaries, including Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, state minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, and youth representatives from across the country.
